Property Crime

You are much more likely to be a victim of a property crime than a violent crime.

Results from the 2004 Statistic Canada General Social Survey (GSS) indicate that 28% of Canadians aged 15 years and older reported being victimized one or more times in the 12 months preceding this survey. This survey went on to advise that Alberta has the 4th highest household rate of victimization (for property crime). The survey advised that the national frequency of the following crimes were as follows (rates are reflected as per 1,000 population, 15 years and older):

  • 181 incidents of theft 
  • 77 incidents of vandalism
  • 44 incidents of theft of a motor vehicle (or part of vehicle)
  • 39 incidents of break and enter
